Receptionist
Good evening, welcome to the Riverside Hotel. How can I help you?
Guest
Hi, I'd like to check in. I have a reservation under the name Liu.
Receptionist
Let me check... Liu, yes, I see it here. A double room for two nights, is that right?
Guest
That's right.
Receptionist
Great. Could I see your passport, please?
Guest
Sure, here you go.
Receptionist
Thank you. Just to confirm — is breakfast included?
Guest
Actually, I wasn't sure. Is it?
Receptionist
Yes, breakfast is included, from 7 to 10 in the morning, on the second floor.
Guest
Perfect. Oh, and what's the Wi-Fi password?
Receptionist
It's on the card in your welcome folder — but I'll write it down for you too. Here you are.
Guest
Thank you. One more thing — could I have another towel? I'm traveling with my son.
Receptionist
Of course, I'll have that sent up to your room shortly.

Guest
Great, thank you.
Receptionist
Here's your key card. You're in room 512, on the fifth floor. The elevator is just around the corner.
Guest
Thanks so much.
(the next morning, guest returns to the front desk)
Guest
Excuse me, sorry to bother you again — there's a problem with the air conditioning in our room. It's not cooling at all.
Receptionist
I'm so sorry to hear that. Let me send someone up right away, or if you'd prefer, I can move you to a different room.
Guest
A different room would be great, actually.
Receptionist
No problem, I'll arrange that immediately.
Lesson 05 — Hotel12
Comprehension & discussion

Listening Check

Before listening

  1. Look at the title "Hotel Check-in." What information do you think the guest will need to give?
  2. Do you think everything will go smoothly, or will there be a problem? What kind of problem might happen?

While listening

  1. Listen and note: how many nights does the guest stay, and what type of room?
  2. Listen and check: is breakfast included? What are the breakfast hours?
  3. Listen for two things the guest asks for during check-in.
  4. Listen for the problem that happens the next day, and how the receptionist solves it.

After listening

  1. In your own words, describe what happened when the guest came back to the front desk the next day.
  2. Do you think the receptionist handled the problem well? What else could she have offered?
  3. If your air conditioning stopped working in a hotel, would you ask to change rooms or ask for a repair? Why?
Lesson 05 — Hotel13
Stage 5

Controlled Practice

88 min
Model
Teacher says the sentence naturally with correct rhythm: "I have a reservation under the name Chen." Student listens only.
Repeat
Student repeats until pronunciation feels natural.
  • "I'd like to check in, please."
  • "Is breakfast included?"
Substitute
Teacher gives a new word, student swaps it into the pattern.
  • Prompt: pillow → "Could I have another pillow, please?"
  • Prompt: name: Zhao → "I have a reservation under the name Zhao."
  • Prompt: the shower → "There's a problem with the shower."
Lesson 05 — Hotel14
Stage 5

Controlled Practice (cont.)

Personalize
Student uses real or imagined personal information.
  • "What name would you use for a hotel reservation?"
  • "What's one thing you always check for when you enter a hotel room?"
Remove prompts
Teacher describes a situation only; student produces the full sentence unaided.
  • "You just arrived at the hotel and want to check in — say it."
  • "You want to know if breakfast is free — ask."
  • "The heater in your room is broken — report it."
Lesson 05 — Hotel15
Stage 6

Role-play

1010 min
Situation
The student arrives at a hotel in [Destination] to check in after a long trip (teacher plays the receptionist).
Teacher
Play the receptionist: greet the guest, confirm the reservation, explain breakfast/Wi-Fi, and introduce one challenge card naturally during the stay.
Student
Check in, confirm reservation details, ask about breakfast and Wi-Fi, make one request, and react to whatever complication the receptionist introduces.
Useful language
I have a reservation under the name...
I'd like to check in.
Is breakfast included?
What's the Wi-Fi password?
Could I have another towel?
There's a problem with...
Lesson 05 — Hotel16
Make it unpredictable

Challenge Cards

Drop one of these in mid-role-play.
No record found

The receptionist can't find the student's reservation in the system. The student must explain and resolve the situation.

Room not ready

The room isn't ready yet even though it's check-in time. The student must ask what to do while waiting.

Unexpected upsell

The receptionist offers a room upgrade for an extra fee. The student must decide and respond naturally.

Middle-of-night problem

The student calls the front desk at night because there's no hot water. They must explain the problem clearly and ask for a solution.

Lesson 05 — Hotel17
Stage 7

Free Speaking

55 min
Ask the student to speak for 30 seconds to 2 minutes, without looking at any notes, either as a monologue or in a live extended role-play: "Imagine you are checking into a hotel after a long trip. Describe the whole process — arriving, checking in, asking about breakfast or Wi-Fi, making one request, and then something small going wrong during your stay. Tell the story as if you're describing it to a friend afterward."
Lesson 05 — Hotel18
Error correction

Review & Common Mistakes

Correct immediately
  • Errors that prevent the receptionist from understanding key information (name, dates, room type).
  • Misuse of this lesson's core expressions (e.g. confusing "check in" and "check out," incorrect word order in requests).
  • Full communication breakdowns during the role-play.
Note & correct later
  • Minor grammar slips (e.g. preposition errors: "under name Chen" instead of "under the name Chen").
  • Pronunciation issues that don't block understanding (e.g. word stress on "reservation").
  • Slightly unnatural but understandable phrasing — note and revisit after the fluency stages.
Lesson 05 — Hotel19
Before next lesson

Homework

22 min
Speaking
Record a 1-minute voice memo narrating a hotel check-in from arrival to receiving the key card, including one request. Use at least 4 expressions from this lesson.
Review
Review the 6 core patterns from Section 4 and write one new original sentence for each.
Real life
If you have a hotel booking app or confirmation email in English, look through it and find 2–3 new words related to hotels. Bring them to the next class.
